Bio Expo Universitas Negeri Semarang Fakultas MIPA 2015

Report Of Bio-Expo 2015
Monday, September  21th 2015. That day Biology Department of Semarang University held an activity called bio-Expo 2015 with the theme "Innovation for Conservation". This event was held to introduce to the general public, especially students from elementary schools, junior high schools, senior high schools about the profile of the department biology and disseminate the research activities conducted in the biology laboratory. In Bio-Expo we can know everything about biology beginning from some experiments until how to make a preparat. Biology department has two laboratories, there are internal laboratory which is located in D11 room, and external laboratory which is located in the garden educational tourism.
Then I walked to the room right of stairs in 1st floor. I see some experiments that make me amazing. Some experiments including elephant toothpaste, pigmen separation, rainbow milk, rainbow rose, magic colouring water, walking water. After that I towards into lab biology molekuler that located in left of stairs 1st floor.  In laboratory biology molekuler described how a result  from microscope can seen in monitor of PC, and to microscope have 2 microscope that is Trikonokuler microscope and Stereo microscope. To can like that we need application is called MoticNet-C. Inside laboratory biology molekuler there are laboratory genetika  to color blindness test, blood type test, test isolation of DNA, and fingerprint test.
After from the 1st floor I walked go to the 2st floor. In right of stairs there are how to make preparat blood smears, how to make preparat of plant organ slices with paraffin method. In center of 2st floor or in laboratory fisiologi animal there are how to calculate erythrocyte in blood, handling mice, knowing the respiration of fish, knowing hemoglobin, and I see a poster that to know our brains work more dominant. In left of stairs, there are explanation of biogas, one of student explain about mini biogas : about how to make, some material to make mini biogas, etc.
Next, I walked to the 3st floor. In there just seen a skeletons of animals that preserved and placed in the aquarium glass.
Each laboratory has different functions and activities, such as :
1. Genetics Laboratory
In genetics laboratory conducted several tests, namely:
a.       Color Blind Test
b.      Blood tests
c.       DNA Isolation
d.      Fingerprint
2. Microbiology Laboratory
In the microbiology laboratory there are many activities you can do, such us :
a.    Fungi and Mushrooms Observation
b.      Painting and observating the bacterial cells using microscope.
c.       Making a single cell protein.
d.      Making tempeh, soy sauce, and natadecoco (using bacteria Acetobacter    xylinum).
e.       Fermentation process.
f.       Observations of  Plating technique (Steak, Pour, and Spread Plate).
g.      Magic balloon Process

3. Biochemistry Laboratory
In the biochemical laboratory there are many interest activities, In this laboratory there are many new things we've never seen before, including:
a.       Making the Elephant Toothpaste
b.      Plant Physiologyc.
c.       Walking Water
d.      Rainbow Milk
Magic coluring water / Iodine Clock
e.       Pigment Separation

4. Laboratory of Animal Physiology
In laboratory animal physiology we explained about several things, including:
a.       Handling mice need to be taught from now, so that when a student will do a practicum with the mice as the object, students can control the motion of the mice, so practicum activities can be conducted properly. The first thing to do when we’ll control the mice is hold the tail using the left hand, hold the mice head using the right hand.
b.      In here are also taught us how to calculate erythrocytes using eabeur law.
c.       Calculate  hemoglobin levels.
d.      Explained about what is hemositer

5. Ecology Laboratory
In ecology laboratory we get a lot of information how to manufacture biogas from manure. In addition we are also introduced to some tools usually used in laboratory, including:
a.       Refractometer, is a tool used to measure the level or concentration of dissolved material, such as sugars, proteins, salts, etc.
b.      Plankton Net, nets with a mesh size to find out the plankton
c.       Salinometer, is a tool to measure the salinity (salt content)
d.      Surber nets, is a tool for taking samples (benthos) in areas that have current strong water and fine sandy bottom waters (slightly muddy)

6. Laboratory of Plant Taxonomy
In this lab we are taught to cultivate the leaf litter into useful objects, leaf litter can be used as bone leaf decoration. bone leaf decoration can be shaped into flowers, picture frames, Bross, key pendant, etc. Use the leaves from trees, because the leaves have a thick leaf bone that is not easily damaged. Here are the step to make bone leaf decoration :
a.       Water was added the pot as much as 1 liter
b.      2-3 tablespoons KOH enter into the pot until boiling
c.       Insert the leaf into the pot until the color of the leaves change to brown
d.      Lift and rinse the leaves using clean water
e.       Brush the meat leaves using a brush or a toothbrush carefully
f.       Soak the leaves on H2O2 solution for removing the meat leaves
g.      Clean the leaves using a brush
h.      Soak the leaf bones use chlorine to bleach the bones of leaves
i.        Dry using a tissue

7. Laboratory Microtechnic
In this laboratory we introduced on squash preparations onion roots and how to make it.

8. Laboratory Animal Taxonomy
In this laboratory there are a lot of animals are preserved, such us squid, snakes, lizards, leeches, and many other animals. In this lab we will be taught about the development structure of animals, animal anatomy, embryology and histology. In the observations, aided by a microscope monocular, binocular microscope, the microscope film camera, and stereo microscopes.

9. Multimedia Laboratory
Multimedia laboratory often used for practicum of animal tissue structure, plant tissue and plant anatomy. In the multimedia laboratory, there are various types of microscopes

10. Biomolecular Laboratory
In this laboratory we explained the molecular analysis tools such as micropipette, UV transluminator, theemocycler. It also explained about the virtual laboratory, DNA isolation, DNA research and romosom.

11. Laboratory SPH and T
In this laboratory we described the tools to know the development structure of animals and plants, using a dissecting microscope, monocular microscopes, stereo microscopes and microscope film camera
Department of biology also has external laboratory, known as the garden educational tourism. The extensive of gardens educational tourism is about 2.2 ha. In here there are more than 100 species of plants were planted. The garden educational tourism consists of medicinal plants, rare plants, fruit etc.
The objective of establishing gardens educational tourism as a source of learning in biology, introducing fun learning and didactic. Here are the Facility  in the garden educational toursim
·         Adrenaline High Rope
·         Camping Ground
·         The Orchid House
·         Garden Nursery
·         The house breeding butterflies
·         Wall Climbing
·         Area of rare plants
·         Area Medicinal Plants
I think Bio-Expo event is very cool, nice and full of knowledge. I think about the biology laboratory of Semarang University is already quite complete. all laboratorys already exist such as lab plant physiology, lab biomolecular, multimedia lab, library, lab microbiology, lab biochemistry (1st floor), lab plant taxonomy, lab ecology, lab animal physiology, lab Microtechnic, tissue culture lab (2nd floor), lab research, lab genetics, lab animal taxonomy, lab sjh (3st floor). There is no shortage in this laboritorium probably just about the provision of laboratory materials that still have to be purchased by students

That is all and thank you
